The small town of vergina located in Macedonia was the once-sacred capital of the ancient argeades dynasty until the first century ad. Nowadays, visitors can explore the two museums in the town. The first museum is Anaktoro, thought to have been a royal chamber with mosaic decoration and partial remains of the building.
The second, and most interesting, museum is the burial site of the Macedonian kings. This includes the tomb of Philip ii, father of Alexander the great. Visitors of all ages are sure to be impressed by the exhibits at this museum.
Mount Olympus is the spiritual home of the historic societies and the abode of the Greek gods. You will be awe-struck by the panoramic sights of this location! It is home to two of the greatest greek summits: Pantheon peak (2918 meters) and the throne of Zeus (2909 meters). The former is now referred to as «Mytikas» and was where the gods of the classical hellas dwelled. The throne of zeus (now known as «Stefani») was exclusively the residence of the powerful Zeus, the king of the gods.
The Olympus natural reserve is an alluring destination for alpinists, naturalists, and other researchers due to its abundant wildlife and delightful scenery. Lithochoro, a small village located on the eastern slopes of mount Olympus 300 meters above sea level, is the most visited site. It offers traditional hotels styled after swiss chalets (the so-called «Xenon`s») and taverns serving exquisite local cuisine. Thus, Olympus is a one of a kind place to discover, full of beauty and wonders.
At the foothills of mount Olympus, there lies an archaeological complex of Dion, a cult center of ancient Macedonia, where major religious rituals were once held in honor of Zeus of Olympus — the next destination in our journey.
Dion is an archeological site that was founded centuries back and has been a religious hub of Greece ever since. Currently, it is not a real city but an outdoor museum of archaeology with ruins of old temples, gymnasiums, baths and more. Dion is like a large historical museum without walls, set in the open air. It still contains some amazing mosaics, murals, statues and other ancient relics that deserve a look.
